At Casa Caracol, we aim to create a D.I.T (do it together) community hub centering historically marginalized BIPOC communities across intersections in order to foster healing and social change. We provide space and programs that encourage sharing ideas, resources, and creativity through story, nature, art, and imagination.
Art as a tool for community connection, healing and liberation.
Community care through conscious practices and the sharing of resources.
Time and space for joy and rest.
Accessibility to resources and knowledge.
Nurturing space for community to connect, share and create.
The vision of Casa Caracol began in 2015 as Palabras Bilingual Bookstore, after recognizing the need to provide an inclusive space where BIPOC voices were represented & valued. More than a bookstore, Palabras began primarily as an event and community meeting space and hub for arts, culture and community activism. After 10 years of dedicated stewardship its current iteration lives as just one part of the collective space now known as Casa Caracol.
Over the last decade Casa Caracol has built a name for itself (originally as Palabras Bilingual Bookstore) as a local community hub receiving various awards, including the Phoenix New Times "Best Community Gathering Space," The "BIPOC Bookseller Award for Innovation" from The Word A Story Telling Sanctuary, and The Community Literacy Award from the Arizona Teacher's Association.
The project started as a small 700sqft space with only five books on a shelf and a vision of creating a space to nurture and uplift the voices of BIPOC community, and has evolved into 2500sqft space that includes a community garden, indoor and outdoor event space where we partner with various organizations to provide resources and opportunities to create, connect, heal and grow. We now hold, an average, over 100 events a year, from monthly weekly meet ups to craft in community, to bi monthly open mics, to seasonal garden days, to educational workshops to provide resources and keep community connected.
